Introducing ABI Bank

The American Bank of Investments, or ABI Bank, is an Albanian legal entity that is licensed, regulated and supervised by the Bank of Albania. One of the first established institutions in the national banking sector, ABI Bank provides universal banking services for both corporate and retail clients.

ABI Bank was created through the acquisition of Credit Agricole Albania by Tranzit Finance, an organization owned by Moscopole INC, along with two investment funds overseen by NCH Capital, a leading US investor in the region and beyond. Finalized at the end of 2015, the acquisition proved an important success story in Albanian banking history, with the country’s banking market having historically seen very sporadic mergers and acquisitions activity.

The deal marked the first time in Albanian history that a failing bank had been acquired and completely transformed. It was also the first example of a leading private equity firm becoming involved in the banking sector of this modest market. The bank swiftly shifted from loss-making to profitability, growth and a clean balance sheet.

The establishment of a client-focused culture further enhanced ABI Bank’s positive results. In 2017, ABI Bank found itself in a position to acquire another local bank. Fully supported by its shareholders and backed by significant growth and marked improvements across all operational ratios, ABI Bank joined the bidding process. The seller, National Bank of Greece, had decided to exit various non-core markets, including Albania. Ranking eighth in the market with circa €300 million in total assets, the Albanian subsidiary was approximately the same size as ABI Bank. Following receipt of all necessary approvals from the Bank of Albania and the Competition Authority, ABI Bank was selected as the buyer, with the process closing in June 2018, establishing ABI Bank as Albania’s sixth largest bank.

Another key development in 2025 was the finalization of the merger between the financial institution NOA and ABI Bank. This move represents one of the most significant strategic transformations in the Bank’s history and introduces a new operating model to the Albanian financial market. Through this merger, ABI Bank has taken a clear strategic step to expand its presence into the microfinance and small business segments, without losing focus on corporate clients and strategic economic sectors.

The merger with NOA significantly expanded ABI Bank’s geographical reach, doubled its branch network, and created new opportunities to support small-scale entrepreneurship, regional development, and financial inclusion in Albania.

With a comprehensive network of branches across all major Albanian cities, ABI Bank’s dedicated staff bring the experience and culture of both banks, adding to the organization’s competitiveness in the market.

ABI Bank is owned by NCH Capital Inc., one of the leading American investors in Eastern Europe with in excess of $3 billion in assets under management. Since its formation in 1992, the organization has built a successful investment track record across Eastern Europe. NCH Capital Inc.’s funds over the last 24 years have founded, co-founded or acquired numerous prestigious companies across Romania, Moldova, Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece as well as the United Kingdom and Brazil.

NCH Capital Inc. is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions, with the independent federal authority responsible for protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and maintaining orderly and fair functioning of the securities market.

In 2024, ABI Bank was a proud recipient of International Banker’s ‘Best Bank in Albania for Retail Innovation’ award. This internationally recognized award honors the efforts and achievements of leading banks from all over the world in the field of innovation in retail.

Commenting on the achievement, Kathryn Swintek, ABI Bank’s chairman of the board of directors, highlighted ABI Bank’s role as a pioneer creating new markets in Albania, providing new services to investors, borrowers and savers and helping clients to achieve their objectives. Mrs Swintek expressed the bank’s gratitude to International Banker for assessing its success in innovation, explaining that clients have rewarded the bank with increased business volumes and loyalty. She confirmed that ABI Bank’s goal was to increase its share of the market through continuous innovation and excellent service.

Accepting the prize, Brunilda Papa, ABI Bank’s director of the retail unit, conveyed the bank’s appreciation of the award, which she said came as the result of the hard work, dedication and innovation of the retail team, who work passionately to bring, improve and innovate financial solutions for the bank’s clients.
